Problems upgrading the Office 2010 beta to the full (RTM) version

by ron on April 27, 2010

As you may have heard, Office 2010 has been released to manufacturing (RTM). It’s available for download via MSDN, and will soon become available in the retail market.

I had been running the Office 2010 beta for a few months, and thought I would take the opportunity to now upgrade to the full version of Office 2010.

I originally tried to uninstall the Office 2010 beta, and it was taking forever. So I hit the cancel button, and it cancelled correctly…..or so it seemed.

I rebooted my machine and then went back in to the Control Panels in order to re-run the Office 2010 beta uninstallation. Well, the item had now disappeared from the list of software, and there were heaps of Office 2010 references left on my system.

Running the Office 2010 RTM version wouldn’t go through, since it complained about a prior beta release already being installed which needed to first be removed.

So I dropped into Safe Mode and hacked away at the registry and deleted the program files, but still no joy.

Anyway, in the end I ended up finding the following article which helped me fix the issue: Uninstall Microsoft Office 2010 Completely.

I followed the advice given, and this successfully removed all references to the Office 2010 beta.

I’m now running the Office 2010 RTM version without any issues.

I have also heard that the following article is also very good at assisting with fixing these types of issues: Fix Problems Upgrading Office 2010 Beta to RTM (Final) Release.
