Day 2 of the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference 2008 has just gone by, and here are the important announcements so far:

  • Windows Azure is a cloud-based operating system which will enable developers to create applications that can seamlessly span from the datacenter to the cloud (Internet).  It will be able to provide .NET services, SQL services and Live services.
  • Windows 7 will be the next workstation operating system released by Microsoft which will supersede Windows Vista.  It is set to be released to manufacturing in mid 2009 and available in the retail market in early 2010.  Here’s a detailed walk-through of the pre-beta.
  • The next version of Office will be available to people in the cloud.  Here’s a preview of the service with sample screenshots.  The online versions of the programs will be called “Office Web Applications”.  Here’s a video review of the new service.

Here’s an email from Steve Ballmer to internal Microsoft employees, explaining the new strategic direction of “software + services”.
