Microsoft and Yahoo search unite

by ron on July 29, 2009

Microsoft have announced that they have united forces with Yahoo Search.

Microsoft Bing will power both Microsoft and Yahoo search properties, with a new 10 year agreement.  Microsoft will also get access to Yahoo’s current search technology, meaning that they will be able to incorporate the best features of Yahoo search into Bing in order to make it a more powerful search product.

This means that the unifying of Microsoft and Yahoo will have a combined search market share of around 35%.  Google is still the 200 pound gorilla with a 65% market share of the search market.

With a year of back and forth between Microsoft and Yahoo, I’m glad to see that a deal has finally been struck between the two.  Google will finally have some real competition, and it will force both camps to keep innovation levels high.
